<image:caption>Henrjeta Mece is a cross-disciplinary artist, curator, and scholar. She is currently an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream at University of Toronto. Mece holds a Ph.D. from the same university and is the recipient of numerous awards. Over the years, her work has drawn on a variety of artistic practices such as, drawing, painting, and performance questioning the discourses of history and geography as languages in crisis and their play on production of identity and belonging. Her work has been included in several solo and group exhibitions in Canada, USA, Italy, Iceland, and Germany among other countries. Recently, Mece was selected amongst 200 artists to represent Central-Eastern Canada in Venice, Italy—as part of the world-wide Imago Mundi project initiated by Luciano Benetton.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A SPACE WINDOWS May 31 2011 - July 30 2011 Curated by: Henrjeta Mece Places disappear; oral histories fade away; only images remain, to haunt the present. In a poster format the silkscreen prints of Derek Caines present a vivid record of some of the seminal events that took place in downtown Toronto three decades ago – marking an era of triumph and tragedy. The prints disclose themselves as ghosts of the past recounting the stories of the time and reinstating its collective memory. In a mixture of mythological creatures, Inuit art, and popular culture these artworks project a distinct style, revealing a kind of beauty that is uncanny. Presented as part of the Paradise Now program. Paradise Now is extended programming that connects the dots from past to present. Art exhibitions, videos, performances, maps and archives will link Toronto’s unique downtown culture today with the queen west art scene of the ‘80s, celebrated in This Is Paradise at MoCCA (Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Toronto Free Gallery June 1 – June 18, 2011 June 3, 7 – 10pm Opening Reception and an incidental performance by Lisa Marie DiLiberto, FIXT POINT Curated by Henrjeta Mece Archiving the 80’s engages with posters, prints and ephemera from the period. Dormenting for over twenty years, Toronto’s unique downtown culture rematerializes throughout this exhibition—opening-up the historiographic experiences of Queen Street West during the 80’s. With a fascinating end of days style and unpredictable design, these fragmentary documents create a repository of historical artifacts. Projecting an era of gesamtkunstwerk (all-embracing art form), these remarkable artworks were produced by seminal artists of the period including, General Idea, Daniel Buren, Brian Burnett, Chromazone, Robert Cumming, Tom Dean, Andy Fabo, Vera Frenkel, Fastwürms, Ednon Garnet, The Hummer Sisters, Jenny Holzer, General Idea, Tim Jocelyn, Molly Johnson, Rae Johnson, Barbara Klunder, Mark Lewis, Michael Merrill, Andrew James Paterson, Andy Patton, Richard Serra, Michael Snow, Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak. Archiving the 80’s was made possible by the carefully preserved collections of Art Metropole, Andre Rosenbaum, Herb Tookey, Rivoli, Trinity Square Video, and Vtape.

<image:caption>ZWEIGSTELLE BERLIN GALLERY Co-Curated by Henrjeta Mece and Rae Johnson JUN 16, 2012 - AUG 31, 2012 June 3, 7 – 10pm Opening Reception and an incidental performance by Lisa Marie DiLiberto, FIXT POINT Mark-making has essentially been a constant throughout the process of being human. It began with our existence as a human species for reasons that are unknown to us and, continues to today, manifesting itself through various forms of drawing. Whether abstract, conceptual, or representational, for the most part, drawing continues to be intuitively driven forming a level of intimacy and fascination around the medium. This inexhaustible medium continues to express our relationship to nature, innermost dreams, and our place in the Universe. Drawing, the precursor to the written word, remains a universal language even in the midst of our contemporary technological milieu. Departing from O KromaZone: die anderen von Kanada—a 1982 show of Canadian artists in Berlin—this exhibition presents a microcosm of various forms of drawing through the work of thirty-seven Toronto-based artists. The artists featured in this exhibition span within senior, mid-career, and emerging including, Stephen Andrews, Rebecca Baird, Mat Brown, Jane Buyers, Catherine Carmichael, Scott Carruthers, Cathy Daley, Andy Fabo, Rae Johnson, Harold Klunder, John MacGregor, Henrjeta Mece, Michael Merrill, Suzanne Morrissette, Gretchen Sankey, Fiona Smyth, Vlad Spicanovic, Lorne Wagman, Kate Wilson. The shifting sensibilities and interests of these artists create a fascinating drawing overview exploring and connecting contemporary strategies from iconic narratives to conceptual markmaking.</image:caption>
